Email forwarding to discussion list
http://fudforum.org/forum/index.phpindex.php?t=rview&goto=160325&th=118665#msg_160325
Couple of questions:
(1) how does the send-to-group feature work? Does it use the same php files (maillist.php), so that posts should be sent to the group whenever cron runs the script? Or is there a separate process for that?
(2) I notice in the global settings that there is an email section. I have email enabled. But I did not fill out any special values for STMS because it suggested not to do that.
Can you give me some advice on how to troubleshoot the post-to-email group feature? I don't know where to begin ]]>wittrs2009-08-18T15:37:12-00:00Re: Email forwarding to discussion list

I don't know where to begin to troubleshoot this, so any information would be welcomed.
Thank you!]]>wittrs2009-08-18T20:02:47-00:00Re: Email forwarding to discussion list

Return-Path: <ludwiggroup@web906.opentransfer.com>
...[snip]
To: whoooo26505@yahoo.com
Subject: New reply to Re: test by wittrs
X-PHP-Script: seanwilson.org/forum/index.php for 130.108.145.81
From: whoooo26505@yahoo.com
Errors-To: whoooo26505@yahoo.com
X-Mailer: FUDforum v2.8.1
MIME-Version: 1.0
In-Reply-To: 140
List-Id: 3.seanwilson.org
There is a PHP script that originates this message? It then sends it to my host, which apparently uses this mail (ludwiggroup@web906.opentransfer.com) to send the mail out, assigning correct to and from addys (whoooo26505@yahoo.com). [This is a notification mail sent from the board, which has my addy listed, to me. I am subscribed here as a user, not an admin. So that is why the to and from are identical.]
So where is the problem? Why wouldn't my email group be receiving the message? It follows the same logistics, right? PHP sends something to ludwiggroup@web906.opentransfer.com, which sends it out as from the message-poster's email and to the email group addy. Where's the error?
Any ideas why the mail system is not working to my group? ]]>wittrs2009-08-18T20:53:40-00:00Re: Email forwarding to discussion list

It is quite possible that the mailing list receives your mail, but discards it as it's not coming from an e-mail address of a registered member.]]>naudefj2009-08-18T21:06:43-00:00Re: Email forwarding to discussion list

The only thing I can think of -- if you can't offer anything on your side -- is that my host is having email issues. The reason why I say this is that one of my email address will not forward mail like it is supposed to, and anotehr will not archive anything (as it is supposed to). I've written to them about it.
But absent those ghosts, do you not see anything for me to check inside or around FUDforum?
I'm not sure what that is, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with email

Ok, the mail is sending, as you say. It's coming in to a private email address that I just tested as a dummy. (It wasn't doing that before). The problem that I see is that the return address is different than what I expected. It is Administrator <webmaster@seanwilson.org>. That's because of the settings I have in the administrator setting. Let me see if adding this addy to my email list fixes it.]]>wittrs2009-08-18T22:40:50-00:00Re: Email forwarding to discussion list

Well not really -- the problem was me! There was no problem.
When I first started testing this, I hadn't set an email address for my administrator log in. Either the system created one or the guy who installed it put one there. Anyway, the one there was bogus -- it didn't exist. And I think that had something to do with why mail wouldn't originally go to my target.
When I did select an administrator mail, I did not realize that it would be the delivery of the mail going into the group. So I never subscribed it to the group.
Now that I have have subscribed the mail, the delivery is working fine.
Sorry for the false headache. ]]>wittrs2009-08-19T01:19:15-00:00Re: Email forwarding to discussion list

What would be the perils of the forums Administrator E-mail: and the Notify From: Emails being one and the same, as it relates to the forum or a discussion list?

That's the way we've got the code and I've never heard anyone complaining about is either. Is this related to the topic being discussed?
Yes it is on this topic.
I do not understand!
Are you saying that the fudforum.org/forum/ admin email is the same as the forums Notify from email?
It is my understanding that the two should always be different.
I have little knowledge of how the E-mail discussion lists actually work other than basic theory, but it seems to me that if both emails were the same and the admin is subscribed to a email list or forum that e-mails sent to the admin would end up on the mailing list and vs versa.
I know FUDforum intelligently resolves conflicts, regarding permissions etc but this sounds a bit too circular.

If I click the contact link at the bottom of this page it shows forum@fudforum.org as the addy; now that makes sense to me because I know FUDforum has Multiple Admins just as it has multiple moderators.
Yet when I receive a notification of a reply it comes from forum@prohost.org which also makes sense to me because I recognize it as the forums e-mail client.
With "wittrs" (and yes I read some of the articles and listened to some of the lectures, and found them of interest even though I had to look up Wittgenstein to understand), after I registered I noticed that the contact e-mail for the admin and the notification/confirmation e-mails were the same. And I found that confusing, but I recalled this thread which really didn't clarify it for me any better.
In your response above I read "admin addy" and "YOUR email" as being one and the same, and "list email" being the "yahoo group" which is a feed to the "Wittrs Email Feed" forum group which in turn feeds replies back to the "yahoo group" again using the admin addy as the forum e-mail client.... That is if I understand correctly.
So there lies my confusion, I have long thought of the admin addy as a direct email to the admin. "Administrator E-mail: Email address of the forum administrator." and the forums email client "Notify From: The email address that all of the forum-generated email, such as notifications and welcome messages, should be sent as. This MUST be a valid email address that you have access to." as the source of all forum notifications etc.
If there is a fundamental flaw in my thinking/understanding I would like to know, likewise if there is no difference I would like to understand that as well.
Thanks

I think the answer is that I am a sole proprieter. I made the admin and notification addy my single, private "home" email address. That way, if someone mails the administrator, they mail me. And whatever notifications go out to others about forum posts, they come from me. So long as the notification email from me never goes to the list (Wittrs@yahoogroups.com), it never double posts. Anyone who subscribes to a message board forum gets a notification from me to their private email, not to Wittrs@yahoogroups.com.
Also, if someone logs on and posts to the forum, that post gets sent to Wittrs@yahoogroups.com. from the person's email that is on file with the login. Because they are already subscribed to Wittrs, it posts to the list (as it should).
So there is no conflict with having admin and forum notification be from the same mail. It just means, I think, that I'm a small business. I don't want to check all these email addys. If, however, you see any other issues with the set up, please let me know. I did not think very much about the set up. I just wanted it to be simple and work. So far, everything's fine.
Regards and thanks.

I noticed that! Welcome you have joined a rather unique group of people who utilize a rather unique and extremely versatile software program.
I believe time will reveal FUDforum as one of the best kept secrets of the forum world.

Of course you are right on that, if I recall correctly that is the way the install file sets it up initially although the default addy's used are not always accurate for your particular setup, desire or intent as you have already found out.
So obviously it works, even with the mail group; but should we install and use it that way?
I originally asked "What would be the perils" perhaps I should have used possible complications, or perhaps possible unintended consequences, and specified personal addresses not just identical ones.
I have always thought that email groups, like the admin and Notify from addy's should be separate addresses yet associated with the domain name of the forum somehow.
Although I lack naudefj's technical expertise and knowledge I believe there will be future difficulties encountered using not only the same address for both but using your personal address for both. But just because I think that way does not make it gospel.
I'm sure that you and your group could make some great philosophical discussions out of this but I think that bringing a forum or website into existence is creating an on-line entity which may exist longer than we do.
So I believe we owe it to ourselves to take that into consideration from the beginning.
