Having said that, I tried my hand at a few and you're welcome to any of them that you think might be acceptable, or to suggest any modifications you'd like. With any luck there will be folks with real logo skills contributing too.
A couple of more standard ones...
And then a few variations on a "classy" theme...

Yeah, agreed, that last one is more promising than some of the others. I'll tweak the angle of the plume to work better with the line of the "F" in "forum" and I definitely prefer the lighter outlining of FUD in the logo before it, but here's hoping we wind up with more "pro" contributions, there's no amount of tweaking that can replace that "eye".
I've got to say those two commercial logos you posted don't do much for me - we should be able to do better than that.]]>kerryg2009-12-21T19:41:23-00:00Re: New logo for FUDforum

Unfortunately it became illegible; the quill and the swoop of the f create too large of a background area which counts as part of the size.
If you could reduce the size of the quill, lighten it to a charcoal grey, and get the swoop and quill both within the border so it is about 160x49px, I might start getting excited!
As it is it looks pretty damn elegant though so you might be on to something.
You might also try beefing up forum and moving the quill over to the end of the m as opposed to the f.

I like 18-jpg with the gold quill at the end of the m (as though writing), yet the FUD looks flat and lifeless unlike the FUD in 21 and 21a which is more rounded and pronounced like I think 18-jpg should be.
The new 17a is not quite what I thought it would be, it looks fine as is but reduced the quill just appears as a vague shadow.
So is it possible to combine the 2 elements of 18 and 21 while keeping all the graphics inside the blue box?
The others with the quill background aren't blowing my skirt up though. As an aside thought you might consider doing one with "Powered By" above the FUD.

Yep, the logo program I'm using is ArtText on OSX and it makes everything easy - except choice and size of output formats. I'm working large because I'm thinking of general branding as much as logo here - trying to get a look and elements that scale up and down for use elsewhere - and if we get the general "vibe" sorted I'll switch into refining icon sized versions. Bear in mind of course that I'll be *delighted* if a pro graphics person steps up and contributes something that blows these away, I've got no ego invested in my graphic skills. Still been trying to think of a way we can incorporate sound, though .]]>kerryg2009-12-22T18:49:32-00:00Re: New logo for FUDforum

That is indeed an acronym with a very particular resonance in North America
Merry Christmas to you and Frank and your families, Mr. W, and to the FUD community. I'm certain most words have a negative connotation, somewhere, in some foreign cultures and circles, Americans are a small percentage of the world's population. It may even culminate to be one of those classic marketing strategies whereby creating some extra attention. Site's like FARK.com thrive on the concept.
Got the trademark?
FUD (pronounced like the English word food) is a brand name for hot dogs, sausages, bacon and cold cuts produced by the Mexican company Sigma Alimentos, which itself is part of the ALFA industrial conglomerate.
Recently, Sigma Alimentos has licensed a US company to produce and distribute FUD branded products in the USA, principally to sell in areas of heavy Mexican immigration where the brand name is already well known.
The name FUD is an acronym for the Spanish words Fino, Unico y Delicioso (Refined, Unique & Delicious). There are other Spanish language neologisms coined by the Sigma Alimentos marketing department to promote FUD. For example, the word Fudgolazo as seen on Spanish language television and grocery store advertising, refers to a contest held by FUD for tickets to the 2006 FIFA World Cup (golazo is a Spanish word meaning a critical or important goal in a soccer game.

Mr. W's Wiki link pretty much nails how the term is immediately perceived in the community of computer-literate English-speaking North Americans (not an easily-dismissed part of FUDForum's target market).
But I couldn't agree more with your other sentiment. If it's going to stay FUDforum, then there's potential for humour and positive publicity in deliberately milking the other meaning of the term - like "FUDforum: all forum - no FUD."

Not disagreeing but I believe it goes far beyond that. A forum (regardless of the software type and there are many) is worthless without users particularly participating users, and my experience has been that the average user shies away from FUDforum because it is unfamiliar to them.
However once a user actually tries it they generally really like the features it provides, but they are still reluctant to participate too much because so few understand and participate with them.
More than that is that the average user admin who decides to use FUDforum faces an enormous learning curve which makes them less likely to succeed simply because much of the information needed to administer it to its fullest extent is over the head of the average user/admin.
Naudefj has made great strides in making the forum more user friendly and easier to understand, but there is still a ways to go.
Bottom line for me is that the average citizen needs to have forums available for their local areas which are not controlled by corporations or politicians, and the only way to accomplish that is to make it as easy as possible to learn and use effectively.
