The fud wiki states:

Description of FUDforum table fud30_msg_store. This table is used to store message bodies (if enabled, by default messages are stored in files for quick access).

http://cvs.prohost.org/index.php/Fud30_msg_store

The messages in my forum must be stored in these files, instead of the _msg_store table because my back ups do not show any message content.

A search through the _msg_store table in my forum only shows the first default message ("Congratulations! You have successfully installed FUDforum...")

So...where are these files containing my messages?

Check in your .../data/messages/ directory.

PS: The message compactor in the next release will allow messages to be shifted between the FS and DB.

Thanks, I found it in /FUDforum/messages.

The forum's messages appear to be written randomly. Just 20 text files named msg_290000... holding all of the messages.

How does the database know what content to pull out of which file when displaying a given thread?

It keeps track of it in the database.
