I don't like the idea of showing user's real names to everyone, so I currently changed the template to only show this to admins.

What I would really like is to only show someone else's Real Name if you're on their buddy list. That way the privacy control is per user and controlled by the user. If you don't want someone to see your real name, don't add them to your buddy list.

Is there a template hack to do this?

You'd need to run a query, so you can do something like

{IF: q_singleval("QUERY")}something{ELSE}something else{ENDI}
