.... Is it possible to ban someone from posting on the forum, but still allow them to use private messaging?

If I toggle them as 'banned' in user management, private messaging still says 'yes' but I presume the banning overrides everything?

Alternatively could I use groups manager to enable viewing, but disable posting etc.etc.?

You can via group permissions settings take away their ability to post new topics and reply to messages.
