It is not obvious how to construct a link to a particular message (not a whole thread) while using the flat mode.

Suggestion: add a small button or text "Link to this message" to each message in the flat display mode.

You can link to any message (default theme) with a URL like -
http://fudforum.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&goto=158384&#msg_158384
or
http://fudforum.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=10547#msg_158384

URL's for the path_info theme would be slightly different.
