Hi Folks;

I've been running IPB 1.3.1 for about 5 years now and it's lack or support for NNTP really bugs me and so, I started evaluating FUD.

As part of that process I thought I would try importing my existing 1.3.1 users/posts etc. But, the script died as soon as it hit my swear table. No problem, I emptied that table and re-ran the script.

It reported no issues but didn't seem to go past members. Would it take a lot of effort to change the script around to support my 1.3.1 ? I'm just evaluating the software right now, no promises - yet! Razz

Yes, that script is somewhat dated. However, it should be quite easy to fix up. If you can provide me with a dump of your forum, I may even be able to help.

Thanks Frank - I sent you an email with a link to the forum dB. I sure appreciate your help while I get accustomed to a new forum - it's pretty slick!

Btw, any time I try to do a quick reply I get bounced to the normal reply screen. I'm now copying my posts before continuing just in case Embarassed

Were you able to do anything with the file?

No, I haven't received it. Can you please send it again?

Strange, are you pressing the right "Post Quick Reply" button?

I've managed to import your forum. However, it's too large for simple testing purposes, just hope I don't have to do it again. Unless you have a smaller one we can use. Smile

Anyway, a slightly improved version is now available for download. Please test and let us know if you encounter any problems.

Hi Frank;

Thanks very much - I'm sorry it amounted to a bit of work Sad I'm eager to test it - is is the same one that's linked off of the documentation?

Yes.

Run the script from the command like to prevent any browser time-out issues.

Odd.... if I run it from a browser I get this immediately;

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of -1 seconds exceeded in C:\Inetpub\fudforum\include\theme\default\db.inc on line 13

If I run it from the command line after a few seconds it just drops back to the cursor.

Am I doing something wrong?

The set_time_limit(-1) function is commonly used all over the code. However, it should be changed to set_time_limit(0) for infinite timeout.

Hi Frank!

That last fix got it working but it stalls right away on the swear filter list;

Importing blocked words
(C:\Inetpub\fudforum\include\theme\default\db.inc:72
C:\Inetpub\fudforum\ipb.php:104
) 1366: Incorrect string value: '\xE4/' for column 'replace_str' at row 1
Query: INSERT INTO fud30_replace (replace_str, with_str) VALUES('/kyrpä/', 'beep')
Server Version: 5.1.42-community

Any ideas?

OK, I needed to change one entry in the swear filter (a letter with a hat on it Smile
I also needed to change fud30_users so that the interests column was TEXT and not VARCHAR(255)

That got me WAY further along but there's a new issue with respect to IP addresses that I don't know how to address (perhaps a code change?)

Importing messages and topics
(C:\Inetpub\fudforum\include\theme\default\db.inc:72
C:\Inetpub\fudforum\include\theme\default\db.inc:176
C:\Inetpub\fudforum\include\theme\default\imsg_edt.inc:112
C:\Inetpub\fudforum\ipb.php:507
) 1406: Data too long for column 'ip_addr' at row 1
Query: INSERT INTO fud30_msg ( thread_id, poster_id, reply_to, ip_addr, host_name, post_stamp, subject, attach_cnt, poll_id, icon, msg_opt, file_id, foff, length, file_id_preview, offset_preview, length_preview, mlist_msg_id, poll_cache, flag_cc, flag_country ) VALUES( 0, 20690, 0, '24.83.208.28, 10', NULL, 1055722377, 'Isp Problem', 0, 0, NULL, 1, 160000, 202904, 535, 0, 0, 0, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL )
Server Version: 5.1.42-community

It looks (to me) like the IP address code is not formatted properly. The ip_address table is OK (15 characters) but in the above I think it fails because of the formatting '24.83.208.28, 10' (that's 17 characters)

Any ideas? I'm getting a LOT closer Smile

Nevermind, the reason seems to be that my forum dB really did have an IP address entry of 24.83.208.28, 10

Don't ask me how that happened but as soon as I changed it to 24.83.208.28 the script rolled on.... Embarassed

Hi Frank!

After slightly massaging the data from my source forum I'm proud to say that I got the script to run and complete. There are only two things that concern me (maybe they are related?).

When I ran the script I got this error;

Conversion Process Complete!

======================================================

I don't know if it means anything but here's the situation I'm seeing. When I go to my forum I can see the different forums but not any of the posts! The same thing occurs if I click on a member to view the posts they've made.

So, it seems we're very close! I did run the consistency check and optimization.

Other then that, the only error I got from the script (that was not tracked back to an issue with my source dB) was that the column interests in the fud_30 users table needed to be changed from VARCHAR to TEXT because some of the users interests were more then 255 characters Smile

At any rate, if you have an idea as to why the posts aren't showing up I'd love to hear it.

Best & Thanks!
Marvin

Strange, I've converter your forum and could see all the posts after the consistency check. If your forum is on net Net, I can login and have a look.

PS: You can ignore the warning and notice messages.

Interesting....

I looked into it further and it seems my personal forum account had something wrong with it with respect to viewing the posts. I forgot what I changed but it had something to do with how many posts were displayed per page and then they appeared Smile

Weird thing though, the import process seems to have locked all posts that didn't have a reply Shocked

Also, if I register as a new user I don't have posting permissions in any of the forums. That's not a big deal though.

I did find another issue though, imported posts with pictures no longer show up in the post. They seem to be treated as attachments?

Is there any way to get them to show up as they originally did - inside the posts?

My apologies for all the questions - I'm still trying to ascertain whether it's going to be wise to make the change or whether it will amount to an enormous amount of work. I know you've already done a lot of work just on the script Razz

Anyway, let me know what your thoughts are on the locked posts and the in-line images, and, as always, thanks very much for your efforts!

Oh, before I forget, the calendar was not imported (or the birthdays?) so the calendar is empty. Closer inspection shows that the birthdays were imported but they weren't applied to the calendar? Also, if I try to edit a post the contents are empty Razz

So, there's some issues yet Shocked

I'll gladly look at it, but I need a smaller test case. I'm definitely not going to reimport your existing form. Would you be able to prepare a smaller test forum with a couple of posts to illustrate the problem?

Hi Frank;

Let's give it a rest for a bit - I'm finding that my unfamiliarity with the software is also causing some issues Embarassed For instance, I now realize that the import did import the user's birthdays but that the reason they are not showing on the calendar is because the software doesn't support it (not a big deal - I just didn't know that).

With respect to the pictures not showing up in the posts - I think that too is caused by the fact that my version of IPB would automatically insert the picture if someone attached a gif, jpg or what have you.

When someone used a remote URL for the picture it does show up in the imported post. When they attached a picture it shows up as an attachment - that's correct but my current forum shows them as pictures.

So, there are some things that aren't right (from the import process) but there are also a lot of things that are different, or, that I had not taken into account. That's why I'm thinking that conversion might take considerable time to shape things up.

Anyway, let's let it rest for a bit and when I'm more familiar with the forum and can more accurately ascertain what aspects didn't work properly during import, then I can report them back Razz Otherwise, I might send you on a wild goose chase Shocked

Yes, conversions can be hairy. Anyway, just take note of the following:

Kwoteer:
I now realize that the import did import the user's birthdays but that the reason they are not showing on the calendar is because the software doesn't support it

Birthdays will be in the next release. I've already written the code and will probably commit it later this week.

Kwoteer:
With respect to the pictures not showing up in the posts - I think that too is caused by the fact that my version of IPB would automatically insert the picture if someone attached a gif, jpg or what have you.

With FUDforum you can have both. A simple converter fix will solve the problem. I just need a (small) test case to work on it.

Best regards.

Frank

Hi Frank;

I haven't forgotten about your kind offer and I am still interested in completing the conversion but I've been side-tracked onto some important stuff that can't be put off any longer. Time is so short!
