FUDforum can merge two or more threads into new one. Sometimes we need to merge two (it's enough) threads into one of them.

Some threads are popular and we don't want to change their IDs, we just want to attach thread that has the same subject but its author isn't attentive enough.

Is it to hard to improve thread merge feature?

That seems like a redundant operation, that is contrary to the merge thread work, who's entire goal is to make 2 threads become 1.

I don't agree. Let's look at example.

We have one thread. Old thread. It has so many posts, so many active participants. I'm sure some of users have bookmarked exactly this thread. We can't change thread's ID at any way. And new user has started new thread with similar subject to our old thread. Other new users start to taking part in that new (old in fact) discussion. What should we do? Should we merge these two threads to new one? I think it isn't right way.

The merging functionality works by taking by allowing you to combine 2 or more topics into a new topic with all of the messages from the "child" topics. Nothing more, nothing less.

How it works now we have two problems:

1. users who have bookmarked merged thread have to update their bookmarks because of ID changing.

2. users who have recived notifications before thread merging can't use links in these letters.

#2 is indeed an annoying problem and I will look into make the necessary code changes to allow subscribers to the merged threads to have their subscriptions automatically migrated to the new thread.

Thanks

But can you solve the case when the user has recived email notification before thread merging? In this way the notification has broken link inside. It would be perfect if this link will be redirected properly to new thread.

No, that issue cannot be addresed without keeping copies of the old topics, that defeats the purpose of merging them in the first place.
