what is the deal on dates?

I see 2004-12-27 and 1143328406.

other that the format what is the difference between the two?

what if I want to sort on the date. can i use either one?

I know that if i want to do any kind of date math, I have to do something special with either one. mktime for php and seconds for sql integer.

comments on when to use one or the other?

thanks!
