Just posting a note to move my question to the top, even if only momentarily.
Upgrade confusion

I hope this is the right board for my question. I went to the installation forum, but that seems to be full of spam!
My problem is in doing the upgrade. I have 2.6.4 and it has been running great for years. But I now have ten to twenty bogus sign-ups every single day. They don't confirm. I thought mayb it would throw them a curve if I upgraded to 2.7.7.
I downloaded the upgrade script and uploaded it to my site, and "ran" it. All I got was:
<?php /* ¸¸?
Permissions on the folder are 775. Any idea what the above cryptic output might mean?
