If I understand this correctly, style merely refers to the images used on the page...
If I want to change the layout, I have to wait for version 2.0?

Not true, using the style control panel you can not only change the images but also change the color sceme entirely of the forum.
Version 2.0, which is currently in development will allow you to actually change the layout completely not just the colors.
