In 2.5.0, at least, people can post messages with bodies several megabytes in size. This is not a good thing.

Perhaps...but I would like to limit the maximum body size to something more reasonable, to prevent abuse(intentional or not). I think that if a post is that big, it should be stored as an attachment, though some people on fast connections might not feel that way and post excessively large posts anyway.

What files would I need to modify to put in a hard-coded limit?

Another idea would be to allow the user to specify the maximum size of the body to be view, in his/her profile, and if a message body exceeds that limit, provide a link to view the entirety of that message. Is that feasible?

There is already a feature allowing you to set a maximum displayable message length for every forum. If the message is long a seperate link will be provided to display the entire message.
