As you may know FUDforum 2.0 has i18n support, which allows for support of different languages within the forum.
Currently there are four languages that are available from the default installation:

  1. English w/spellcheck
  2. Chinese
  3. German w/spellcheck
  4. Polish w/spellcheck
  5. Spanish w/spellcheck
  6. Swedish w/spellcheck
  7. Turkish

If you would like to translate the forum to another language, you can do so quite easily by translating the text inside a single file, where all of the FUDforum's text messages are stored.

  1. Inside your forum installation go to the i18n directory.
  2. Make a copy of 'english' directory and give that directory the name of the language your translating the forum to.
  3. Now you can go into the newly created directory and edit the msg file, which contains all of the messages.
  4. If you want to see how your changes look like, go to the admin control panel and use the 'Language' admin control panel to change the forum's language to the language you've translated the forum to.
  5. Once you've completed the translation send it to <a href="mailto:forum(at)prohost(dot)org" target=_new>forum(at)prohost(dot)org</a>

Thanks to tiufang, we now have a Turkish translation of the forum.
If you would like to use it, grab the latest forum from the CVS.

Thanks to vidaubannais FUDforum now includes a French translation.

Since Pspell library has a French dictionary it means that FUDforum will be able to spell check messages in French.

In order to make the translators more involved in the development a mailing list (or even a dedicated forum here) for i18n matters should perhaps be created. There you could inform of changes to the code or additions of new text strings that require translators to react. As it is now we never really know when we should get to work.

I will try to make some sort of a script that would allow me the prepare a report of sorts that I'll post on the forum making a list of translations that are 'behind the times' and need updates.
So, that the translators can quickly see if there is any pending translations for them to do.

Hi,
maybe this automation could allow to generate informal messages, be it a PM here or an e-mail notification. Just an idea, it would be a nice way to stay informed, even if u re not a regular on the forum.

I'm in the middle of the Hungarian translation and just a couple of day till the end. But I've got some question:

1. What type of font (and size) do you use for the buttons
2. What (exactly) is the color of the font

Thanks!

The font used for creation of the buttons is "trsahpenguenb.ttf' you'll find it attached to this message. The font sizes are 12 or 11 for translations where text strings simply do not fit with the 12 font.

The colors & button templates can be checked out from the cvs using:
cvs -z3 -d :pserver:anonymous(at)asuka(dot)prohost(dot)org:/forum21 checkout fud21_img

The following changes:

- translated untranslated strings in the middle of the file
- converted some umlauts which slipped through in past times to html entities
- translation of new items in the forum's faq

While we're there, I noticed the following:

default -> i18n -> english -> help -> readingposting.hlp:
line 172:
there's a duplicate
</font>
ending tag. Probably all other languages' readingposting.hlp files are affected, too.

I took the freedom to remove it in my translation Smile

Bye

Actually that font tag is needed to close the font tag opened on line #169.

I checked the English translation with w3c HTML validator and there does not appear to be an issue of excessive font tags.

Edit: Oh yeah, I've added your translation to the CVS, thanks.

Hm doesn't make much sense. You can't use font recursively, this will lead to unexpected results. Instead you have to open and close them each time you want to change the color (which is of course annoying). Or much better you should replace the font tags with CSS, as they're depricated.
<span class="mystyle">
as substitute would make more sense and would result in less code.

There is nothing wrong with recursive <font> tags, they are perfectly valid.

<font color="black">fdffdffs<font color="red">fdsaf</font>fdsfsdaf</font> etc... is perfectly acceptable and is rendered properly by all browsers I am aware of.

by the way: you can remove this opening <font> tag, it's not needed anyway, as each character opens up a <font> of its own.

Olliver

edit: here's the helpfile version where I also removed the start tag. both start and end tag aren't needed because there aren't any characters outside of the font blocks.

if you want it the lazy way you can define inline CSS attributes as well, this would result in "clean" HTML 4.0 (=not using deprecated elements)

True, but deprecated tags still work and as far as I know all browsers support them and will support them for many years to come.

Hi,

Attached is the updated turkish translation.
There should be no unstranslated strings now (except some words like "forum" which are the same in English and in Turkish, and except a few that are impossible to translate by themselves alone like "on" or "of").

UTF-8 seems to nearly always cause problems, so I changed both the strings and the help files back to ISO8859-9.

There may be one little bug (a hardcoded string?): In User CP -> Settings. Just next to "Smileys are ON", the string is "Maximum Length:". It's still English in Turkish translation. I tried to msgsync and tr_status, but could find no variable for that string.

And something which should actually be in the suggestions forum (but it's a very little wish and I'm so lazy, here it is):

What about displaying on top/bottom of each forum (i.e. on top/bottom of thread listings) the users that browse that forum?

cya again,
2f@n

Hi, Ilia.

I've just set up a forum using the latest version. I need to translate everything into Esperanto. However, there is no file by the name of i18n in the files section. I've already tried the manual, but that doesn't help. Have there been changes made in later versions? What do I need to do?

Once I've made the translations, I'll be sure to return them.

Thanks in advance.
