when I post a link to a msg, in the forum what should the URL look likd.

for example:
http://www.mysite.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=33&start=0&rid=3&S=68b1ca20d5572675d60a91531a07c2ac

That looks like a URL to a particular topic. If you wanted to link to a particular message you'd need to do:
http://www.mysite.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&goto=[message_id]

this seemed to work

http://www.mysite.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=17


I'm not sure what t=msg&goto=[message_id] is.

if I use
http://www.mysite.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&goto=17

I go to a different message that the first one above.

The actual message redirection uses javascript to focus your browser on the message in question. Some browsers occasionally fail to do so. Reloading the page usually helps.
