i think the problem has something to do with the setting "ENABLE URL SETTINGS" --- when this is disabled i can log in fine, but it creates a problem with IE because in the login form line displayed on the main page checking the cookie checkbox produces the same problem in IE.

the problem is much the same as this user's -- from installation issues --- admin login loop
Quote:

Hi

I have installed FUD and it is up and running in its initial state. It is now running on IIS with a MYSQL backend and PHP 4.3.4

When I login as the admin (http://au-webforum/forum/adm/admloginuser.php) I get a prompt for the admin username and password. I enter the password and it then it returns no error but again prompts for the username and password. This process continues and just loops and loops and loops.

I have set my IE security down to medium and checked all the standard stuff like enable cookies etc.

I also get this error when I go to the forum initially. Notice: Undefined index: QUERY_STRING in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\forum\index.php on line 376

Not sure if these two problems are related.
Any help would be awesome.

Thanks
Josh

Are you using a Proxy?
Does your IP change every request?

I take it you are referring to the "Enable URL sessions" option?

i'm not sure exactly what a proxy is but if its what i think it is ( something to do with being on a network in a large company ) then i'm not using one -- am on a typical dialup

my understanding of IP is that i get a different one every time i connect to the internet. (like i said i'm on a dialup)
( i have tried disconnecting and reconnecting but the problem persists)

Yes i am refering to the "Enable URL sessions" option.
this was the last (and more or less the only) thing i changed before the problem began - i cant change it back now though

Try the followings cookies.inc.t and see if the problem goes away.

(be sure to rebuild the theme after replacing the file).

i uploaded that file to the server root dir/src replacing the .inc.t file that was already there ( actually i renamed the old one instead of deleting it)

there is no change in behaviour

!!! of course i cannot rebuild the theme as i cannot access the admin ctrl pannel because of the admin loop i am experiencing !!!

If you cannot rebuild the theme of course the change of the file is NOT going to fix the problem.

you could modify the compiled cookies.inc and replace the entire ses_make_sysid() function with the one from cookies.inc.t

Are you trying to login via the forum's login page or via the admin one? (you should be using the latter).

That's correct.

Are you certain you've modified the correct cookies.inc? Make sure the one you've modified is inside include/theme/default/.

The cookies.inc.t needs to go into the src/ directory. When you rebuild the theme that file will be used to construct cookies.inc & compiled into index.php

You previously mentioned that you could login when URL sessions were off. If that is correct modify GLOBALS.php and change

$FUD_OPT_1 = some number;

to

$FUD_OPT_1 = some number &~ 128;

could you please verify that these TWO things i've done have been correct before we proceed, thanks, as i am a novice at programming and a little confused

Firstly: the directory in which i installed the cookies.inc.t file was: /messageboard/thm
(where messageboard is the directory in which i made the initial install)

Secondly: there are 2 different GLOBALS.php files so i didnt know which you meant - so i tried first changing the file in the FUDforum/include directory as so:
/* $FUD_OPT_1		= 1739519103; */
$FUD_OPT_1 		= 1739519103 &~ 128;

then leaving that one changed i changed the file in the messageboard/include directory as so:
/* $FUD_OPT_1		= 1742664895; */
$FUD_OPT_1 		= 1742664895 &~ 128;

then i changed the first file back to the origional covering all the combinations
after each try i tried to login and was unsuccessful
have i done this correctly ?

The cookies.inc.t should have been placed inside the src/ directory. There is ONLY 1 src/ directory that the forum creates, so you cannot confuse it with anything else.

That said replacing the file WILL NOT fix any problems, for changes to take effect you must rebuild all your active themes. If you cannot access the admin control panels to do so you need to edit include/theme/default/cookies.inc as per my earlier instructions.

There is only 1 physical GLOBALS.php file and it is located inside include/ directory. The other 2 GLOBALS.php files are symlinks to the original file.

You have 2 include directories? That's not possible, unless changed something. FUDforum has only 1 include/ directory.

Hmm by the looks of things You installed the forum twice, once you installed it in such a way that data dir was different from web dir and the other instance you re-installed it so that the two directories were the same.

You need to open GLOBALS.php inside the webdir and see which GLOBALS.php it tries to include and modify that GLOBALS.php

Based on the directory structure shown, the ONLY forum install that exists is the one inside the messageboard directory, the FUDforum directory only contains DATA files, hence being the data_dir.

Inside /messageboard you should have GLOBALS.php file. Inside that file there will be and include statment trying to include the 'real' GLOBALS.php file. That is the file you should edit if you want/need to change any settings manually.

ok well i have opened the GLOBALS.php file inside messageboard/include and there is no include statment in there - there is the following which seem unrelated though just in case:

  • $INCLUDE = "/home/m/u/murphyr/public_html/messageboard/include/";
  • require($INCLUDE.'core.inc');

i can reinstall the forum but i have some concerns:
i dont know if you remember but you had to log into my account to install the forum for me - you said that the problem is being fixed in a future update which i'm not sure has been released yet so i dont want to try to reinstall and end up not being able to -- especially if you think it would be easier to fix this problem instead - also there is not much point in reinstalling if it wont solve the issue - ie i only made a small change to the global preferences and now i cant even log into the forum, which seems strange to me !!!
Mad

decided to reinstall - used FUDforum v2.6.0 Release Candidate #6 installer (with zlib compression) -- had a problem at step 2 but discovered that my FTP program ( FILEZILLA) was incorectly (while set to auto) using ASCII instead of BIN - when i reuploaded there were no more problems -- i still have an issue with the behaviour of the login in mozilla which i will begin in a new thread tomorrow -

SUGGESTION :: maybe there is something that can be included in the install script that can make it 'clued in' to this problem as i think filezilla is a pretty popular ftp and i imagine a lot of people leave it set at the default which is auto.

Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool

Popularity doesn't necessarily equal to usability:
FTP programs which default to ascii for php files rather indicate thoughtlessness of their creators (which may think there's nothing else but Win32 on this planet). \n\r only works in Win32 environments without problems (except the scripts expect binary input, then it wouldn't work despite Win32) however the majority of webservers run UNIX so it's not too surprising people get b0rked scripts with unexpected behaviour. That's why I hope you're wrong with your guess and the majority of Win32 people use FTP programs with reasonable settings.

well so do i ----

however it really was a bit of a sweeping statement anyway as i'm by no means an expert in this area --- no i just went along to download.com and picked up the most popular of the (FREE) FTP programs -- so that was FILEZILLA at the time -- before that i was using WS_FTP which i found to be ok but a little on the non friendly side --- lately i replaced my standard windows notepad with HTML KIT which i have found to be very helpful --- however these are all free programs, maybe a serious developer should not take these sort of programs seriously and spend some money on a good one -- or maybe there are good free ones out there ---- i'm just posing the question for general conversation --- maybe a discussion on another forum is in order !!! Both install & upgrade script contain a short string of binary data at the start of the file, which tricks many win32 programs into thinking the file contains binary data. Unfortunately as you see some programs ignore this...

are you saying that ALL php files going to a unix server should be uploaded in binary ?

both of the programs i use have a list of filetypes that they will upload in ascii - the rest they upload in binary -- .php files are uploaded in ascii by default in both programs --

that's HTMLkit and FILEZILLA --- both of which i thought were reasonably well thought of ---

no just the install or upgrade script because they contain binary archive at the end of the file. Special case.
