Just a note to warn people that might have this same problem. I have installed an earlier version (1.2.3) of the forum and did not have this problem, only on 1.2.6.
After the install, the icons at the top of the home page were missing, except members and search, it was the sqaure box where the icon was supposed to be.
The fix was to change the www root, by adding a / at the end of the line. This fixed the problem.
