Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '?' in /home/merkage/public_html/install.php on line 1

Before it would just load a lot of unreadable code, now it's loading this, anyone got an idea of my problem?

Can you run other PHP scripts on your system? For example, create a file like this and see if you can call it from your browser:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

Perfect! If you look at the first couple of lines of install.php in a text editor (like vi), does it look like this:

<?php
/* [34m^G~Nظ^@~P~N^@^A))[34m^Y^@^@
 * First 20 bytes of linux 2.4.18, so various windows utils think
 * this is a binary file and don't apply CR/LF logic
 */

Please try to remove the second line (binary characters) and let me know if it helps or not.

What a mess! Let me talk to a couple of guys and get back to you.

PS: By when do you need it installed? Any chance of giving us temporary access to do some debugging?

Just for future reference, the solution is to set detect_unicode to off in your php.ini file as documented here.
