I'm helping run a website whose forums are currently running version 2.3.7. We're wanting to upgrade to the latest release, but we're concerned about what all will change when we upgrade. We're worried that because of the huge gap in versions, we'll have to redo a lot of the forum's settings, such as all the smilies, the ranking system, the theme template, etc. Also, is it guaranteed to not lose any posts/threads in the upgrade?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your smilies, levels and forum data will remain. The one thing you may need to restore are the themes, since those had changed quite a bit since 2.3.7.

Oh yeah. always make backups, so in the event of a problem you can restore the forum with minimum effort.

I tried running the forum's data dump, but it always errors in the process:

Query: SELECT * FROM fud23_index LIMIT 100000,100000
Server Version: 4.0.16-standard-log

It's always the same error in the exact same place (fud23_index)

What's another recommended way of making a backup, or maybe a fix to that error?

Thanks again.

You probably have a lot of data and MySQL times out while PHP is writing it to disk. With large forums I'd recommend doing a manual datadump, via mysqldump & creating a tarball of all the forum's files (you may need to unlock the files 1st).
