I have recently installed FudForum 2.6.0, but I think that the darker grey area, with the avatar, member status etc, takes too much space. In 2.5.2 the avatar and user-name was placed in a column to the left, which made the actual message stand out more.
If you have a lot of short messages in 2.6.0, it feels like the non-message areas takes up more space than the actual messages, which makes it a bit fuzzy.
It is possible to switch between the old and new layout? I am rather new to FudForum but I think its very neat forum.

In most instance you will actually find that the new layout is more compact and also will work much better on smaller resolution or non-full size browser windows.
