RFC 3977 describes the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP).

FUDforum is not a NNTP server, but has a built in NNTP client to read posts from newsgroups and import/archive them as threaded forum posts.

So, I guess you can say that FUDforum follows the standard more or less.
