Our forum (using 2.6.0) has right now 40 members. One gets a list with 2 pages, all registered uses are on the first page, the second page has only the line "no such user".

Based on this observation I assume that there is a minor glitch in the paging logic of the "Members" list, and that it probably creates an extra page whenever the number of members is a multiple of the page size.

Can't replicate with 2.6.1
That forum a check specifically for this condition, meaning that you wouldn't see the 2nd page unless there was truly >1 of result.
