i prefer ultraedit on windows but it looks that it has been ported to mac
finally as well.

by the way here are the features i look first in text/code editor:
- syntax highlighting - pretty much standard with any editor these days
- good macro recording system - easy to record, organize and playback
- column editing mode (and not just any column mode - it should be as good
as in ultraedit).
so far i haven't found any other editor that implements all of these as good
as UE and i did try a lot of them including free and commercial ones.

Haven't come across anything free that does all this on MacOS, unless
TextWrangler does column editing. It's big brother, BBEdit does all you
mention but it was pricey for a text editor at $129. I was shocked to
find it's come down to $49. Maybe they fired the marketing guy or Rich,
the author finally died.

PHP Development Tools (PDT) installed on top of Eclipse 3.7 (Indigo) does
all of that except macro recording. You can define code templates, though,
if additions to the built-in ones are necessary (which you can modify).
Because it is Java-based, Eclipse is virtually platform-independent, and it
is for free. Add the Aptana plugin and you have a good PHP (etc.) IDE at no
cost.

In case you've tried to use column mode in Eclipse and got the
conclusion that it doesn't exist, please note that it isn't triggered
with the mouse. The rest of the feature works accordingly.

Eclipse is pretty good, though most Windows folks I know prefer using Notepad++. Netbeans is pretty cool too but I think Eclipse's debugger is better, you can also use it with xDebug

The text editor that you're most comfortable with would be a good start.
If you want something that does syntax highlighting etc, I understand
some people like bluefish, which I believe is available for the mac.
Doubtless some people will have various opinions ....

I've noticed that TextMate seems pretty popular in videos of various web
framework development systems, including CakePHP, and Behavior Driven
Development, like Cucumber. Not free - about $60

I personally use Textmate for my day to day development. But from time to time, I also switch to Sublime, Coda, and AquaMacs

NoteTAB Pro is by far the best one I've found when there isn't an IDE
already in exstance. It comes with a PHP library and it's very easy to write
your own f you want to make it work specifically for certain sets of
objects. Lots of free libs available too, but there's nothing as useful as
one you design youself as you're using the program. Highlights, edit as many
docs at once as memory will hold, good support, free and very reasonable pay
versions available. NotePad ++ is very good also and can fill in any holes
NoteTab might leave. Look up NoteTAB on a search engine; you'll fiind it
very enticing, IMO.

For just php, probably Eclipse but if I worked using my machine's LAMP
stack only, I would probably go with Coda or Textmate. However I do
most of my work on remote servers so I like Eclipse's Remote Server
Explorer and SVN support.
Code and Textmate both cost under $100, Eclipse is free.
Re: Aptana in Eclipse. I have tried repeatedly to install it under
Indigo (newest Eclipse) and it doesn't show up. Buggy.

I was using CodeLobster (Commercial) which supports different
frameworks including codeigniter , joomla, drupal ( except ZF ). The
best thing i found on it is debugging feature without extra parameters
on the debug URL. So it would not break the URL Rewrites and that was
really helpful.
Zend studio also have the same feature , but the support to other
frameworks are less.
I wish if Eclipse could also support the debug feature without extra
URL parameters.

Vim (and gvim) and Emacs are two editors that emerged out of the UNIX
world decades ago. Both are free, portable to many different operating
systems (UNIX/Linux, Mac, Windows, and many others too), extensible, and
supported by a large open source programming community. Both are
designed as programmer's editors but are adaptable for many other uses
as well. Both are based on command sets that have been adopted by other
implementers so that there are actually alternate versions available of

Both of these editors are feature rich but complex. They require some
investment in learning time to make good use of them. You may not want
to get into that. However, if you use a text editor all day long for
many different tasks on several different computers and OSes, with plain

Both also have interesting add ons. One of my favorites is the Emacs
"org mode" which is a kind of outliner on steroids with some very nice
features.
Being free is nice too, not just for the initial acquisition, but also
for all the updates you might need down the road as the editors evolve
and for when the version you have no longer works on the next computer
you buy.

Out of the box, I'd probably say Eclipse with PDT. If you work in many, many languages and want support for all kinds of text editing capabilities, TextMate can't be beat, with the caveat that it costs money. (I bought it several years ago and couldn't be more pleased with it.) I haven't used TextWrangler, though, so I can't really compare there. As others have also mentioned, good ol' Vi(m) and Emacs are also worth contenders.
The problem with anyone making a go at "best editor..." is that you tend to imprint on a particular editor and stick with it through thick and thin as long as it works for you. If you currently have no preference for editor (say, for example, you're coming from the Notepad.exe world of Windows and are new to developing on the Mac) pretty much any of the editors listed here will be a step up.
The mac does have vim and emacs (non-GUI) preinstalled, so you could give those a go before you jump into something like Eclipse+PDT or TextMate/Wrangler if you want. Knowing vim will let you edit on *any* *nix-based system anywhere, so it's a good thing to know anyway.
There is a version of emacs for the mac called Aquamacs. I tried this and I have to say, as a regular emacs user, I found it to have broken too many things emacsish to me. For a GUI emacs, I just use the GNU Emacs available from macports.
That said, jumping into Eclipse+PDT as an integrated IDE is pretty cool way to develop php (and other code).

I have TextWrangler running permanently with about 90 files open. Nice
thing is if I shutdown or restart it just reopens all 90.
