Hello,

I work with a web dev firm that uses open source tools. We are evaluating forums for a client, and so far I have been very impressed with FUDforum. I have been through the docs (very nice docs at that) and can't seem to figure out how to restrict certain forums from certain users.

This is what I would like to do.

Forum list
Company events
Design
Tech
Programming

I want all users to view and post to company events.
Then I only want designers to have view post reply access to design

technicians to have view post reply access in the tech forum and same for the programmers in the programming forum.

I go through the docs and add users to groups, and modify groups but I don't see where I can limit each groups ability/permissions to view certain forums. Any tips on the best way of doing this? The client I am evaluating this forum package for will have a very large group of users, and will need to restrict what each user has the ability to view.

Thanks for any help offered.

You need to use the group managment to do so (link from the front page of the forum). This form will allow you to define general permissions for a forum.

I have spent a lot of time in the group manager, but I still don't understand how to limit access to certain forums for particular groups.

If I have 5 forums, and I want to give you access to 2 of those forums and hide the other 3. And I have 25 users that I need to setup the same way. Where in Group Manager do I restrict access to the 3 forums, and grant access to the 2 forums?

I understand how to create a group, and how to add users to groups. I just don't understand how to giving groups access to certain forums, while restricting them from others.

Thanks again for the help, sometimes my tiny brain just can't grasp a simple concept, but this one is beating up on me Confused

This depends on your situation.

If we are talking about a single user who would have a special set of permissions you'd then set those permissions by selecting the appropriate YES/NO values in the user-land group manager for individual forums.
However, if you have multiple users with the same permissions then you might as well create a new group who's controls would span over >1 forum.
In this case you'd make this group control permissions for the forum you wish to deny access to and add users to that group.

I am still doing something wrong. I will step you through what I have done. Before I do that, thank you for your time and effort!!

Login to the forum as an admin then go To admin Control Panel, then Groups Manager. I type in the name of the new group I wish to create called "New Test Group". Under Group Resources I select/highlight the 2 forums I want this group to have access.

select Inherit from = no where
Anonymous and Registered Masks = No.

Then I set the following Permissions to Yes.
Visible
Read
Create new Topic
Reply to Messages

The rest of the permissions are set to no. Scroll down and click on Add.

I then return to the forum, and then click on the Groups Manager link. In the group drop down menu, I select the group I just created called New Test Group and click edit group. I then click find user, type in the user name and submit, then click on their name and it populates the member field with the proper user name. I then change the settings as follows.

all set to yes
Visible, read, post, reply.
The remaining options are set to no. I then click Add Member.

I then go to another PC and login as user I just added to the New Test Group, and I see all forums and can post to any of the forums.

Shouldn't this user only be able to view the "resources" I selected for the "New Test Group" when configuring the permission for that group?

I feel I am doing something incorrect, but have no clue what it is. I just can't understand how to restrict users or groups from participating in the forums I chose to restrict.

Thanks again for any help.

Few corrections:

1) The controls on the admin panel define the permissions the group manager can change, they are not values for group members per say.

2) You decided to do your permissions based on inclusion rather then exclusion. Which means you either need to modify other forums to deny access to the generic registered user. Which is why I suggested the exclusion approach that is simpler to implement.

Thanks again for all the assistance, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I failed to change the permissions for the Global Account registered users, which was over riding my other settings. After I changed those, everything worked as needed.

Glad to see you have an active forum here and people willing to help. I will do what I can to push your product with our company and try to make it our standard. It has great features, and even rivals those of UBB threads from infopop, which I have been using with a gaming clan I belong.

This client will be our first test run of using this product, and if all goes as smoothly as it has so far, I can see us using it with many more in the future!

Thanks
