He's not well-known to me, and as far as I can recall, he hasn't
directly insulted me before (more than I'm willing to absorb). I realize
I'm a newcomer in this group, but in my blessed state of ignorance I
don't see him as a troll.

Yeah, the grep details are getting a little off-topic now, but the
general topic (finding where a PHP config setting originates) is still
relevant. I know for a fact that I've had trouble in this regard with
some fairly complex server setups. Who knows, something interesting and
worthwhile might be discovered in this subthread.
For example, TL's mention of "ack" could be a lifesaver for those who
didn't already know it (or have written their own version, like me).
I'm not planning on continuing Usenet conversations per email. My
address is valid; anybody who wants to can contact me privately, but
will most likely be ignored as a matter of principle (if it's not personal).
