I just upgraded, and my custom template with a custom name was changed to look like the default template. The custom graphic images I created were also replaced. Is this normal behavior to make sure I don't have a template that is incompatible with the new version?

In this case it is normal because the old templates were not compatible with the new ones. Your old modified templates were backed up into errors/.backup/ directory.
