The existing PEAR packages are still mostly written using PHP 4 and the
new releases just aren't there. Some packages need to be run with the
notification for deprecated features turned off. I use some of their
package for convenience (HTML_Form, HTML_Table, Image_GraphViz and
Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer) but there are no new releases, no updates,
nothing. The same applies to other packages that I sometimes use
(Console_Getopt, Date, Log). Does anyone have more info about PEAR? Is
the project that was lambasted as PHP CPAN really going belly up? Having
such a repository would be more than useful, in my opinion it was a
mistake to standardize error handling and all those things that are in
the PEAR package.

I cannot comment on the general state of PEAR as I'm using only a few of
its packages, but you may have a look at the website of the packages
you're using. E.g. HTML_Form[1] has been superseded by
HTML_QuickForm2[2], which seems to be still maintained. And that what
it's all about: as long as there are maintainers for the packages, PEAR
is not dead. I believe that every helping hand is welcome as usual for
OSS. ;)

That does not ap-PEAR to be correct.

Have you visited the PEAR site lately? If no, why not? If yes, why are you
still asking?

Yes, I have.

Because the essential packages like PEAR itself and PHP_Beautifier
haven't had any releases for quite some time.

Ineptocracy
(in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) – a system of government where the least capable to

members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are
rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a

pear/pear-core had the last update 5 days ago. Also, OSS requires people
who not only want to consume.

However, that was written on 24th Jan 2012 -- nearly two years ago.

The date there does not matter.

So - what does a news tell us about the activitiy of a project, if it is
nearly two years old?

ACK.
But about the last update of pear...
<http://pear.php.net/package/PEAR/>
Current Release
1.9.4 (stable) was released on 2011-07-07 (Changelog)
What exactly do you refer by "pear/pear-core"?

Which is mentioned in the document linked from said section of the PEAR
site. Which is why the date on the PEAR site does not matter.
