There is a lot of unused vertical space on the search page, and selecting, so it may be a good idea to have a scrollable, fixed-height list of forums/categories.

Like:

| Search All Forums  ||
| General            ||
|  Bugs              ||
| Insane Asylum      ||
|  Booga Wooga       ||
|--------------------~~

Instead of:

|--------------------^^
| Search All Forums  ||
|--------------------~~

It was supposed to appear as "and selecting a forum in a large single-select drop down list can be somewhat frustrating"

What you suggest seems like it'd waste more space then it would it gain as it would push the search results lower on the page.

I had a brain freeze and forgot that the search interface was shown on the search results page.

It would use up more space, then.

I'll think about it some more.
