I was having a similar issue. Un-check the "Use Gzip Compression" option if it's set. That's what worked for me. No size difference and lightning fast.

If you can get to the command line on your server you can try running admdump.php from the CLI. The CLI tends to give you better debug information.
I know my suggestion is a stretch knowing most host providers don't allow that type of access, including mine.
