Is zlib a standard install that I'd already have on my computer? Or would I need to download it from http://www.gzip.org/zlib/ ?

Also, does it matter whether I have it or not?

The download page has a version 'with zlib compression' and one 'without zlib compression'. I don't know which one I should download. I don't know if I have zlib compression. All I know is that I can zip and unzip documents - I'm on Win-XP. Which version should I download?

This referers to whether or not your PHP has zlib extension compiled. You can find out from phpinfo or php -m on the commandline.

Since 'with zlib compression' is the first option on the download page, is that considered the preferred version to use? I'm not familiar with zlib compression and the advantages/disadvantages of using it. Thanks.

I'm going to use the 'without' version for now, and add it later when I understand it more.

For the benefit of anyone else like me who knew nothing about zlib until now, here's the page from php.net:
