I am aiming for at thread listing that is close to what can be seen on this site:

http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=threadt&frm_id=27

Is something like this availables as a theme, template or add-on for FUDforum? If not, would it require much work to set it up (I'm new to FUDforum).

The forum has threaded view for both topics inside a forum and messages inside a topic (tree view button does this). The admin can make this the default or the only view via the avaiable settings.

Thanks for your quick reply. I was thinking more about the 'in-line' formatting of the topics where the author name, date etc. follows immediately after the topic text. I was assuming that I would need to go into the 'Template Editor' and maybe choose 'threadt.tmpl' and change something there. Is that about right?

Yes, you will need to modify the thread.tmpl template to make the topic listing appear in a manner similar to the website you've shown. For the message listing within a topic you'll need to modify tree.tmpl
