1). Is it possible to disable message icons completely from the board? - I can't find an option to switch them off completely.
2). How do I get the message title and the poster info on the same line in the thread view? - currently the message title appears at the top left of the table cell and the poster info at the bottom right making each line too high for my liking.

Sure, there are 2 ways to do it.
1) Remove all message icons via the admin icon manager.
2) Edit the posting template to not display the message icon controls.

You need to edit the drawmsg.tmpl template for that, if you search the forum you will find many examples of such modifications.
