Often times I find newer members will just post things compltely unrelated in an existing thread rather than creating a new thread. Any chance there could be an option to move a post to being a new topic?

You can already do that via the split topic functionality, that allows you to move messages from an existing topic to a new topic.
You can then use merge topic funcitonality to merge the new topic with an existing topic on the same issue.
