I have a troublesome user but I'd like to avoid banning them. Is it possible to restrict their posting to certain areas of my forum?

Yeah you can use the group permission system to limit their access to various forums.

So I would create a group, put just them (or whoever else I wanted restricted to that specific area) in it and restrict that group's access? Thanks so much for the help. =)

You can use existing groups (there is one per forum) or you can create a new group who's access controls span several forums.
