It's good ' ' between image and text, but not '<space>'.
example:
<a class="UserControlPanel" href="{TEMPLATE: usercp_lnk}"><img src="{THEME_IMAGE_ROOT}/top_search.png" alt="{MSG: search}" /> {MSG: search}</a>
it's good looking if page not all screen, and usercp in 2 lines or more...
now may be situation was image and text placed on too different lines..

What browser are you using that "hides" the space? In IE, Firefox and Opera the space is clearly visible.

Not sure how a space would become a new line when rendered HTML, perhaps if you can show me the problem...
