Any chance that the appearance of the forum would improve?

Why not take all the best ideas from other forums and incorporate in fudforum? i mean, if you want to be be unique, it should be manifested in features and other properties, and not in appearance. That is what i say.

Why not just grab the interface ideas from other forums?

The current design is excessively drab. Forum is meant for a certain set of people who are very much bothered about the overall appearance, and the current design will surely put them off. If you are the unix coder type of person, you wouldn't be using a forum anyway - you will mostly be in a mailing list.

Is there any plans for overhauling the default design of the forum. It would be nice to have the user info in the left rather than at the top. Also the inside forum colors should be a little more bright.

i assume that the current drab design is the typical unix mentality where people want to focus on the content rather than on the design, but the sad fact is that an average forum user is not that kind of a person. A forum user needs to have a beautiful sorrounding, and the pure utilitarian approach will put them off.

Thanks.

I am not a forum person, so my ideas are what i see in the other forums. For instance, a template with a brighter colors and the user info on the left would be great.

i think maybe we should put a message in this forum itself requesting submissions of some themes that can be included in the fudforum package itself.

i am sure some of the people might be interesed...

Thanks.

colors are not horribly difficult to change, though it would be great if someone wrote a template mod script.

Make a new template in the admin CP Template Manager in case you make a major boo-boo. Set it to default and enable it. Then edit the templates. I'd do a new header graphic first.

Then, start with forum.css

Use the admin control panel edit the forum.css template. This is the forum's style sheet. Look for the hex color codes, which start with a #xxxxxx. Just plug in different hex codes to change colors of fonts and such. I use GIMP, the free graphics editor, and its Color dialogue to pick and test hex codes. Font styles and sizes are here, too, though it can be a puzzle to figure out which ones appear where.

The stripes that go across the screen are actually thin little .png graphics files that repeat a bunch of times to look like a stripe. tableHeaderbg.png is one of them. I just ftp'd it off of my server from /var/xxxx/FUDforum/thm/default/images and changed it's color in my graphics editor. I saved a copy of the original, ftp'd the new color up, and shazam (clicked rebuild theme in Admin CP)-- and a different colored stripe appears.

Someone (maybe me) will get around to giving a better description of what mods to make to change colors and fonts and such, but if you know how to use ftp and the admin cp, you can tweak a lot of the look.

I tried this and cannot get it to work. Am I doing something wrong? I downloaded the .png files and changed the color in photoshop and then re-uploaded it. I rebuit the theme, but nothing happens?

Any thoughts?

Did you upload the files into the thm/ or theme/ directory?

Thanks for the reply. Can't say I'm exactly sure what I did wrong, but I got it working. It was in the right directory. I don't think I was saving the file properly after changing the color and was then just re-uploading the original.

Either way, looks good

Thanks again
