How Often to Check Consistency? [message #26684]

I've been running FUDForum (under eGroupware) for over a year and standalone for several months on a different site.

I have never done a forum consistency check or rebuilt the search index or compacted messages.

Are there guidelines or best practices for when or how often to do these maintenance processes?

Once a week is a good idea, if you have a really low traffic then you can do it as infrequently as once per month.

Thanks for the reply.

If I've never run these before, how long can I expect the site to be down?

If there is a problem, will it cancel itself or just hang in limbo?

I'll obviously do a backup first, but just kind of want a "heads up" on what to expect.

It depens on the size of the forum, usually no more then 10 minutes.

I was brave and ran all the consistency checks over the weekend. None of them took more than a minute or two, some quite a bit less than that.
