I'm seeing forum users sending Private Messages to IDs which are created by the forum for those who post only via the mailing lists. Is there a way to turn off Private Messaging for mailing list users?

No, you can modify the user creation code (based on mlist users) to set "Allow Private Messages" by default disallowing messages PMs to be sent to them.

Perhaps this might be a suggestion for future versions of the software. Since IDs created by the forum when people post via the mailing list(s) don't even have passwords, any Private Messages sent to those IDs will never be read.

Are Private Messages stored indefinitely if they're never read? Or, are they automatically purged after a period of time?

I've already added such a feature to CVS. Private messages are not automatically purged.

OK, I replaced the users_reg.inc.t file with version 1.84. Then I established a new test user on the mailing list and sent a test message via the mailing list. Once it was posted on the forum, I gave that user a forum password and logged in as that test user. The "Allow Private Messages" option was set to "Yes" by default.
"Private Message Notification" was turned off, but "Allow Private Messages" needs to be set to "No" by default.

I have now, and now it is not adding the user at all or even posting the message. Someone replied to my second test message from the second test user, but the original test message did not post.
