There may be an option to add a custom rank image for some people like administrators, moderators, or developers, in addition to or in place of the rank image.
Or perhaps there may be an option to specify a custom tag image, optionally displaying in place of (or in addition to) the rank image?
Custom tags are really useful, and an image option may even add more to their usefulness.

You can insert RAW HTML into a custom tag, so if you want an image, then by all means, use the <img src> tag.
