I've upgraded my FUD from 2.7.6 to 2.7.7RC1 and have a warning message when try to create a new PM (screenshot attached).
PM folder contain only one test message with only a one word "admin", so in reality I do not exceed folder size.

On a "fresh" 2.7.7RC1 (not upgraded) there is no such a bug.

Check your settings and make sure that the space limit for admins and moderators is set in relation to private message folder size.
