I have an old version of FUDForum (2.6.4) which has been remarkably stable for my purposes. However, I seem to be having a little battle with about a half dozen "members" who join and have the status of unconfirmed users. I delete them, and right the next day they are back again. They are not posting, but this battle has been going on long enough that they have to be getting something out of it, and I'm thinking that they are using the forum somehow to send out mail. I have been unable to upgrade because my site has an 8meg limit and the upgrade scripts required more memory. 1. Can my version be used to send out spam? and if so 2. Is there anything I can do to stop them?

They can't use your forum to send out e-mail spam. What they are more likely to be are spammers registering for accounts to enable them to post messages. However, since they don't bother to confirm their accounts via e-mail they remained unconfirmed.

Thanks for the response. These unconfirmed users are given German or Eastern European names, and occasionally one or two of them are confirmed. But I remove them, confirmed or not, if they are in that bunch and have no posts registered. I have had a very rare spam posting, from time to time, but month in and month out these folks don't post. If they ARE in Eastern Europe, can they post and then delete their own posts after ten or twelve hours? Many do seem to have www pages as part of their profiles, generally talking about cialis, etc. It is good to hear that they can't be sending mail. My web host has noted that a good deal of spam is being sent from my domain, and so I am looking for possible loopholes in things. I have some cgi scripts which are suspect also.
