FUD is able to compile as well as to optimize the msg files we edit during L18N process. However we could improve greatly this procedure if the following were implemented:

1) When 2 strings are duplicated, the compiler script simply says in a very inpleasant message "a message is duplicated at line XXX".
a) This line is NOT the ligne from the msg file and the concerned file (concidering that it is not a completly funny number from I don't know where) is not even mentioned. The newby could have real problems and spend a lot of time trying to figure out what bloody message is replicated (believe me, I have done it). I think a little something extra (e.g. specifying the name of the file or the real line number in the msg file) would be excellent and would prevent the guy starting the translation from droping out thinking it is tooooo complicated Confused

2) The script could (I don't know how) be able to detect special characters to be escaped (only <'> as far as I can see) - However the triky part is that this character must not be escaped everywhere - The reason being that some of the strings are going to be "copied/passed" in HTML, some will be put within some PHP code which are not going to be very happy in meeting a character <'> in the middle of a string.

Voila, whith a minimum effort I think a PHP guy could fix this out?
