hello, Laughing

seems that the current install takes away the user permissions on the forum directory structure... which mite not have mattered if I were able to change the graphics from within the setup. I had to change them back and I am not sure a regular novice would have the skills to do such a thing as many people will be installing the forum to a remote location without using linux. I myself used only a ftp program and a login control panel for php/perl etc tec

Many web providers have designed new commercial sites with the ability to manage there PHP data bases from a http control panel.

I read it somewhere dont know who made mention of it but, when the script installs to the forum who becomes the owner???

Here is another idea, have a picture on the setup page of the current layout, have them click the graphic image in the area they want to modify.. upon doing this have it bring their setup page out "one that contains a box with the setup info" for the area to be changed.

FUD is already the best forum written anywhere but upon adding such a feature I believe I could use it on my commercial website "meaning add it as a feature given to my clients" and offer it to all my customers and maybe even set it up for them "which I might just do anyway" I also have another major provider "liquidweb.com" they are willing to add it to the auto config control panel of their commercial webadmins structure "so that there client will have it at there finger tips as well.

I cant explain by typing I would do better on the phone...

call me 1-863-709-0699 ask for ghost...

I must say FUD can not even be compared with the others, it is far superior... funny thing I saw someone "selling a forum database setup" that did not even have HTML support or a 3rd of the features FUD has... his price 60 dollars! I laughed when I saw it thinking how much more FUD had to offer and how his did not even compare to FUD...

Another IDEA.. a warning message telling the admin to never change the status of himself.. i.e dont ever make the admin a moderator, dont know what I was thinking and I am not even sure why I did it was just playing wid all the features, well I changed the status of the admin and it locked me out of the admin control panel LoL i could not get back in to it.. thats when I discovered that I had no user rights to the dir anymore ehhehehe anyway a nice warning telling them what they can change and cant change about the admin our make it so that those parts of the admin account can not be modified Smile

In short FUD Rules!

P.S. Thank you for all you have done so far and for giving us such a great tool for communication, I belive FUD is #1...

When the install script installs the forum, the files & directories it creates are owned by the webserver user & group.
Configuration files are given 666 permission to allow you to modify them without having to play with permissions.

I suspect one of the features we may want to add would be some sort of PHP file browser to allow the admin to add/remove/edit files. So the admin does not need to worry about permissions if they want to manually modify non setting files.

Another possibility is to ask the admin for their user login & password for thier account and upon completion of installation chown the files back to admin's user/group.

At this point I am not sure, which would be more convenient/useful implementation. I suspect some people may not be comfortable giving the install/upgrade script their account login/password combination.

As for the admin thing you've mentioned, DEFINATELY a good point. I'll be sure there is some in between step and/or warning before admin priveleges are stripped/added to a user, this will be in version 1.2 for sure.

P.S. When would be a good time to contact you via a telephone?

I am here 24/7 I have the phone by my side... If you want you can call me right now if not let me know which you use ICQ or MSN, or if you have a better form of communication I am game.

I have another new Idea, some peopl might want to use this as a type of news center "like me lol" I would like the abilty to add a post and change the date of the post to reflect the day the news was suppose to be posted. I am going to re add all my jan news for Kingpin but I want to be able to change the dates on my post, if this is something that would not be much trouble I would love to add that to my current install...

I can't say how much I really like this there are not enough words to say how moved I am by the work you have done.

I really like the polls, most forums only allow you to have 10 items in the poll, I dont know how many items I added to my 1st poll but it was way more then 10, very very nice feature.

I am looking forward to talking to you via voice...

PEACE

Another possibility is to ask the admin for their user login & password for thier account and upon completion of installation chown the files back to admin's user/group.

In a shared hosting environment, I doubt that's going to work. Chown is usually only available to root. Unless you have a decent host who will chown them for you then your stuck.

However, you might consider using FTP to create the files through PHP such as
Quote:

$handle = fopen ("ftp://user:password(at)example(dot)com/somefile.txt", "w");

then no chown needed. Will need username and password though. This is a lot more likely to work in a shared environment.

Note: Had trouble using code tags in this post. Had a weird duplicate last line effect in post preview. Used quote instead with no trouble.

Nothing I say is worth two cents but I still get $100/hour with a half hour minimum.
