Interesting idea, but like you I am not certain whether or not they are overkill. I hope that other people will comment on this suggestions and make their opinions known.

maybe and option in the CP to turn it on/off?

maybe some css guru out there that could modify the css so that the cell background changes only when the mouse rolls over the link and not just the table cell?

To be honest I'd rather avoid adding more & more options, since every options is yet another global variable that needs to be kept in memory for every page.
If anything I think the mouse over should trigger on the entire cell like it does now rather then just when you move the mouse over the link.

I think it should be something users can addon themselves. It is not very hard, and only takes a bit to impliment it.
Having a place to share tweaks and template modifications would be nice.

just to let you know - because of the poor DOM support in Opera that option does not work

Which version of Opera and what platform? In my experience Linux & Windows Opera even on the same version tend to act somewhat differently.

6.02/3 Linux

and yes i have noticed that as well. but the DOM issue is a real one. Opera 7.0 is going to have a completely rewritten engine so that they can more easily implement better DOM support.

I see, thanks for the info. As long as it does not break the layout in Opera and simply does not 'show' the feature I think it is still ok to consider such a feature.
