I uploaded my own avatar without incident two weeks ago. The permissions on my file and this file 78 are the same?
I did just upgrade to 2.3.3RC1 this morning. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. I just deleted my avatar and re-uploaded it without a problem.
Any ideas?

Cannot replicate the bug using latest CVS of FUDforum. The only possible reason for failure would've been file system permissions, but you've inidicated you were able to remove the file after upgrade, so that rules that out...
