I want to relocate my forum. Actually, i think there is still something wrong with the current forum. I'm not sure how or what but something is wrong.....Problems started when I installed a RC... Mad

I finally got it to work the other day when I upgraded to 2.3.2. A bunch of folks registered and posted msgs. Then I changed the footer. All I did was to add some html code for a counter just before the </body></html>. I did the update and took a look at the forum. All the new members and all the posts that were made since the upgrade were gone!!! Shocked

Still don't know what happened to them. so I have lost all confidence it this particular installation Sad

...( the other installs I have are doing great Laughing

).

So, I want to save the data of the current forum. I think. Maybe the problem is with the data. I just don't know. Anyway, I would then like to delete that forum....including all the tables. Then I want to do a new install. Then, if I think the data is safe, import the data into the new forum. Well, that's the general idea.

I really need to move the forum anyway.

Feasible? Problems

You can install over an existing forum that'd overwrite all existing data. I am fairly certain your data is still there however, just modifying theme (if that is what you did) could not possibly result in data loss.

well, I would agree with you that modifying a template should not result in data loss. But that is the only explanation I can offer. There were probably 15 new members and about the same number of new posts. I was estatic seeing activity since the forum had been down for over 2 months.

I read every message and checked every new member. As part of the conditions for using my site I require certain folks to register and post a message. I check each of these new members and write their name in a log book. I review the log book periodically and if they haven't registered, I send them an email. I had recorded these members in the log book.

I have a counter that I have been using for years and have it on all my sites. Never had a problem with it - it's just a little bit of javascript. I opened the footer and pasted it just before the </body> just like I have done hundreds of times before.

I did not make any other changes. Period. When I went to look at the index page ( I do that to "activate" the counter ), I immediately noticed same "August 11" post in one of the forums that had been staring at me over the last 2 months. Incredibly, the new members and their posts were gone. In the 15 minute span it took me to register the counter and enter it into the footer, all the new stuff had vanished.

Maybe it is a coincidence. Maybe there is another reason. The only facts I have are: they were there, I posted the counter, they were not there. Nothing else occurred on my end.

This will just remain a mystery.

what about the idea of doing a data dump of the old and then importing to the new? If the data is "corrupt" in the old, will I be corrupting the new forum? Will the data dump or import process insure "data integrity?" And no, I can't define what "corrupt" means in this situation; I have to rely on you for that.

yes, I could just install over the old. But once again, I'm just a little nervous about this mysql database. I think I would just like to delete ALL the tables manually and let the new install create the ones it needs. That way I won't wonder if something from the old somehow found it's way into the new.

I will upgrade the old to 2.3.3, do the data dump then install a new 2.3.3

The datadump across version is dangerous because the dump includes all the files associated with the installed forum, such as compiled themes etc...
The problem is that if you have a latter versions some files may differ and their subsequent overwrite by the importer from the dump would cause problems.
When you install a forum it will automatically remove the existing MySQL tables if the prefix is the same, so no worries about that.
