I believe I installed the new update correctly on my RH7.2 Linux system. The file did execute. No error messages. However, the 'powered by' message at the bottom still says 1.1.1. Does that mean that I did not really get the update?

It means that the update script didn't run correctly. When you ran the script, did you recieve a whole list of message telling you which files were replaced etc...?
Also, when did you download the update script you are using? If it was a while back, you may want to grab a later copy.

fjrohlf wrote on Sat, 23 February 2002 3:03 PM | Yes, I received a lot of messages about files being replaced. I did the upgrade on 2/20/02. I downloaded it the day before. I guess I should download and try again.
|
Did at any point the script stop and mention something about you needing to chmod files/directories so that the install script may overwrite the files?
I'll be releasing version 1.2.1 within the next 30 minutes or so with a new update script.
Once I do, please try to update your forum, when the update script runs, copy all the text it outputs, if you see the same problem paste the text you've copied into your reply.
Also, could you give me the URL to your forum?

Another question then, if you open index.php with an editor at the top of the file you should see a line which looks something like this:
$Id: index.php,v 1.24 2002/02/23 20:11:40 hackie Exp $
Could you please show me what your line says.

You mean the index.php file in the root directory of the forum? I don't see a line like that. This is what the top of my file looks like>

I ran the new update script and it gave the following output - but still gives 1.1.1 at the bottom of the screen so I don't think it actually did the update. I also note that the date and times on my forum files (except for the global files) are still set to Feb 14th when I did the original install.

What you are showing me is the output of the CONSISTENCY CHECKER not the update script.
Which file did you run?

P.S. I thought I might try running the update again in case it made a difference. I received the following message:
Quote: | This upgrade script has already run successfully. If you wish to run this script again, remove /var/www/forumdata/errors/UPGRADE_STATUS
|
So I guess it really did run the update.
I looked at the UPGRADE_STATUS file and it contains just the number 11. There was also an UPDATE_STATUS file but it was empty.

Well it may have run it but it could have failed...
Do your files still say version 1.1.1?

? where do I find that? I ran the 1.2 update file in my browser. That window then asked for the path to GLOBALS.php. When I clicked next I got a screen saying that I don't see the output of the consistency checker then I should click on the given link. I did not do that because the consistency checker did run automatically.
What other output do you need to see?

Heh, consistency checker will not tell you anything useful in regard to success or failure of the update script.
The other output you gave me is actually an error message indicating that you've previously ran this update script and unless you remove the lock file to which it gave you the full path you will not be able to ran that particular script again. This is a security feature in case people forget to delete the update script.
To check the version of your files, open any of the php files, ex: index.php and paste here the line which begins with $Id:

Try to download the update to version 1.2.1, when the update script runs it should output a whole lot of information. Paste it here...

I deleted the status file and ran the script again. The following is the only output I get other than the consistency check.
Quote: | CURRENT FORUM VERSION: 1.11 DOCUMENT ROOT AT:/var/www/html/forum/
Got chunk info: , , , , ,
Executing Consistency Checker (if the popup with the consistency checker failed to appear you MUST click here
Completed PLEASE REMOVE THIS FILE(/var/www/html/forum/update-v1.2.1.php) UPON COMPLETION OF THE UPGRADE PROCESS. THIS IS IMPERATIVE, OTHERWISE ANYONE COULD RUN THIS SCRIPT!

I have never used IRC. I thought I had downloaded some software for it but I just looked and cannot find it. I am willing to try it if you can suggest some software that allows a quick install on windows.

You can download a shareware IRC client at http://www.mirc.org/ it is pretty small and very easy to use/install.

Problem Resolved.
Reason: The update script was uploaded via a Windows computer, which added \r to it, effectively breaking the script.
