Unknown problem with installation [message #876]

I'm having serious trouble installing fudforum. The script hangs completely at step 2. Is there anybody out there who have had problems of the same kind? At first prottoss suspected that some functions might be disabled, but that's not it. Could it be write permissions that cause the error? I have forum and forum_data chmodded to 1777, but they are inside a directory that is 776. Does that have any effect? Secondly, I'm forced to have forum_data inside my html root, because I do not have the rights to change the mode of other files.
