I think it is simply an attempt to keep all the 'new' viewers that 1013 hooked with the X-Files movie this summer. A new viewer is not going to stay with the show for long if it continues as it was for the past 5 years. References to past shows and story arcs are not going to be 'caught' by the new group, and they will tune out. I think CC is trying to use this season as a new base, truly a new 'beginning', to keep a large audience base.
Should he be doing this, is really the question--isn't the X-Files popular enough to justify keeping the formula that has worked so far? I would think so, and I'm a fairly new viewer myself. The final hooks for me were indeed set by the movie.
But rather than expecting the new season to spoon-feed me the stories, I started going back and reading all the epsisode guides from season 1-5, and trying to watch what I could, and get caught up myself.
I'm not saying I'm dis-satisfied with the new season--I actually like Mulder when he's sarcastic, since DD has an excellent persona/delivery method for that type of thing. But I do see that it is an entirely different story base that seems to be set for Season 6.
Whatever... just my thoughts...

: In all five previous seasons of the X-files we have been entertained by a serious actors with a well thought out plot with moments of humor that were fitting to the series as a whole. This season however, Chris Carter appears to be attempting more comedy in his episodes. This goes against everything that has made the series successful in the first place. He has also taken the actors (mainly M & S)personalities to an extreme. Scully has become super assertive and dramatic and Mulder has never been as sarcastic as he was in last week's episode. I am confused and concerned about the X-Files series and hope the writers are not running out of ideas.
