The PNGs had been working on the boards for the better part of a year, at least since 2.0 days.

I just yanked the bit of Javascript you included from youngpup to make the alpha channel "work" for IE, and all the old forum icons became visible. Of course, the "new message/no new message" icons now don't have transparent backgrounds...

My forum icons DO have transparent backgrounds however, since I'm pretty sure they were built with the "transparent pallet selection" (like GIFs do, since I used Photoshop 6 (initially then 7) to make them rather than using the alpha layer.
