If you uploaded your custom images manually you need to make sure that the webserver has permissions to read them, otherwise it cannot copy them.

the web-server is my computer, I did it in the shell.
I ment, I have a theme foo, in ~/FUDforum/thm/foo/ but to make use of my custom images in that theme, I have to chmod all images in thm/default/images to 000, otherwise it only copies default-images to $WWW-ROOT/fud/themes/foo/images. instead of foo-images.
